Environmental and Green features

We are in the midst of a project that is aimed at reducing our carbon footprint and becoming more sustainable.

We are also seeking to landscape and provide more amenity value for guests in the Hostels immediate environs.
Since August 2012, we replaced all bulbs (100+) with Low Energy bulbs, Installed new LED lights in common areas, we estimate that these and more effective energy management will reduce our electricity consumption by approx 50%.

We also Installed pressure reducers on taps to reduce water wastage and conserve resources. We hope to make a significant saving on our fossil fuel and water bills as a result as well as being kinder to the planet. Please don't worry, our famous power showers are still just as good !

We are upgrading our recycling regime and installing composting facities in Spring 2013. We will also be landscaping and adding picnic, recreation and amenity areas around the Hostel and down on the waterfront. We will be using permaculture principles and natural materials as far as possible. We will be running a number of workshops around this in Spring 2013 in the areas of Cob Building, Willow fencing, Raised bed construction etc. Micheal has a certificate in Permaculture design and Natural Building and has worked on projects all over the world for many years. If anyone experienced would like to hang here for a while in this beautiful place and help, they would be most welcome.
